The Great Get Together comes to Cam at the weekend with the community coming together to host a day of fun, football and fun at Cam Cricket Club. The first Great Get Together was held last year on the anniversary of Jo Cox’s murder. This year her family have decided to move the celebrations to the weekend of what would have been her 44th birthday.

Organiser Doina Cornell said: “Our community came out in force in Dursley last year and everybody said what a great experience it was, so this year we’re doing something even more special.

“We’re lucky in having a great community spirit in Cam and Dursley and we hope people will come together to build on that, and build links with each other, on Sunday.”

The event kicks off at 12noon, with a barbecue, followed by skittles and outdoor games throughout the afternoon. A bar will be running all day and England’s World Cup game versus Panama will be shown at 1pm.

Jo Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater, said: “Jo loved a celebration and, speaking as a proud Yorkshire lass, nobody can rival us for the best parties, but there are so many wonderful events planned for the end of June that I wish I could get to all of them.

“Britain is once again coming together to show our country at its best. Whether it’s the big community gatherings or the dozens of smaller events, including boat races, musical extravaganzas and street parties, this will be a weekend to remember.

“I’m touched by how many people say they remember my sister’s words in Parliament when she said we have more in common than that which divides us. In Cam on Sunday we can prove her right and help continue the work she started.

“I’m sure the event will be huge success and I hope everybody who gets involved has an amazing time”
